How AI is used
When you choose AI meal scanning, BiteBuddy asks Google Gemini Paid Services to identify visible food and estimate portions, calories, and macronutrients. The result is an estimate—not medical or dietary advice—and you can review and correct every value before logging it. Meal images and food names are not used for a private wellness-pattern evaluation. Automatic wellness check-ins and Safe Mode pauses are not active.
What data is sent
BiteBuddy sends a re-encoded meal image after removing EXIF and location metadata, with a fixed nutrition-estimation prompt. No name, email, account-derived identifier, precise location, historical entries, or Battle history is included in the request body. Google receives BiteBuddy’s project API key and server connection information.
Model training and provider handling
Google states that prompts and responses submitted through Gemini Paid Services are not used to improve its products. BiteBuddy sends the prepared image inline and does not create a Gemini File, cache, corpus, or other provider-side user resource. Google's published abuse-monitoring policy says it retains prompts, additional context, and responses for 55 days for safety, security, and required legal or regulatory disclosures. Separately enabled developer-owned API logs may have a different configured retention period.
Storage and deletion
The camera and prepared images exist temporarily on your device. BiteBuddy attempts to delete those temporary files after processing, but cannot guarantee cleanup on every interruption. The current scan endpoint does not save image bytes in BiteBuddy’s database or Storage; it retains scan-job and estimate records needed for reliability, correction, security, and account history. Account deletion removes or anonymizes BiteBuddy-held scan records subject to applicable retention exceptions. It does not erase content already sent to Google from Google's separate abuse-monitoring retention; Google states that it retains submitted prompts, additional context, and responses for 55 days. BiteBuddy sends the image inline and does not create a separate Gemini File for the user to delete.
Your consent and choices
The scan begins only after you accept the current disclosure and deliberately submit a photo. You may decline, enter meals manually, withdraw optional consent, correct an estimate, or request account deletion. Material changes to this disclosure require a new consent version.
